On Wednesday, 26th February 2025, the Medical Education, Staff Development, and Appraisal department hosted a two-hour virtual training session titled “Medical Liability and Bioethics in Palestine: An Overview”. Conducted via Zoom, the session aimed to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of medical liability and bioethics within the Palestinian context.
The session was coordinated by Dr. Souad Belkebir, head of the MEU in collaboration with Dr. Rasha Khayat, from the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences, and was led by Dr. Akram Daoud, a distinguished academic with degrees in philosophy and law from a French university. Currently a civil law professor at An-Najah University, Mr. Daoud brought over a decade of experience as a former dean and vice president, offering valuable insights into the legal and ethical dimensions of medical practice.
The training focused on five key objectives:
- Defining medical liability and its types (civil, criminal, and disciplinary) under Palestinian law.
- Identifying the key elements of medical liability.
- Analyzing real-life cases to determine legal and ethical responsibilities in medical practice.
- Applying bioethical principles to resolve ethical dilemmas in healthcare.
- Exploring ethical challenges in professional relationships with colleagues, supporting staff, and students.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions and case studies, gaining practical tools to navigate the complex intersection of law and ethics in their daily practice. The session emphasized the importance of adhering to bioethical principles while addressing the unique challenges faced by healthcare professionals in Palestine.
The event was well-received, with attendees praising its relevance and the expertise of the speaker. This training marks a significant step in strengthening ethical and legal awareness among healthcare providers, ultimately contributing to improved patient care and professional accountability.
For future sessions, the department encourages all staff to participate and continue their professional development in this critical area..
